At AESC English Stage 1 is designed specifically to meet the unique educational needs of students in an environment that is supportive and nurturing. Working in small groups allows the teacher to work intensively on explicit teaching of aspects of the task such as pre-teaching of the vocabulary, deconstructing a sample text or a joint construction. It provides support for students who may be reluctant to contribute in a larger group. English Stage 1 aims to develop students’ skills in listening, speaking, reading, viewing and writing, capacity to create texts for a range of purposes, audiences and contexts, and understanding and appreciation of different uses of language.
AESC also offers an innovative and unique approach to teach Mathematics, providing superb opportunities for students with special needs to learn the basic Maths skills in a least stressful, but challenging and creative environment. The tasks are scaffolded to meet the individual need of every student. Mathematics Stage 1, provides an introduction to the basic concepts and techniques to use and apply mathematics, count, compare and order numbers, and describe relationships between them, secure knowledge of number facts which can be recalled quickly, used and applied appropriately, calculate efficiently and accurately, position and transform shapes, recognise and use their properties to visualise and construct, measure accurately using appropriate units, interpret and compare scales, process, present and interpret data to pose and answer questions.
